UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting suspect charged with murder in New York

The man suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week has been charged with murder in New York City.

Luigi Mangione, 26, faces five counts including murder in the second degree, according to an arrest warrant. He also faces two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, was arrested Monday after he was recognized at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., a couple hours outside of Pittsburgh. He “became quiet and started to shake” when asked if he had been to New York recently, police officers wrote in his criminal complaint.

A ghost gun, silencer and writings expressing ill will toward corporate America were found on Mangione, linking him to the crime, police said.

Law enforcement also noted that the suspect had been in Pennsylvania for “several days” and tried to keep a low profile. He faces five charges there, as well, including for carrying a firearm without a license and falsely identifying himself to law enforcement.

Thompson was gunned down last week outside New York Hilton Midtown, where he was set to address an annual investor meeting.

New York police detective Yousef Demes said the shooter, whom he identified as Mangione, fired several times at the healthcare executive but that an autopsy showed a gunshot wound to the torso caused the CEO’s death, according to the warrant.

New York police commissioner Jessica Tisch called the shooting a “brazen, targeted attack.”

Thompson joined UnitedHealth in 2004 and led UnitedHealthcare, the company’s insurance division, since 2021.

An extradition proceeding is expected to take place Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania, according to a spokesperson for the state’s courts.
