6 in 10 oppose ‘big, beautiful bill’: Survey

Nearly 61 percent of Americans oppose the GOP’s massive tax and spending overhaul, a new poll found roughly a week after President Trump signed the “big, beautiful bill” into law.

About 36 percent of respondents in the CNN poll released Wednesday said they “strongly oppose” the new domestic policy megabill, while 25 percent said they “somewhat oppose” it. Just 11 percent of those surveyed said they “strongly support” the legislation, while 27 percent said they “somewhat support” it.

“We made promises, and it’s really promises made, promises kept, and we’ve kept them,” Trump said during a July 4 signing ceremony at the White House. “And I have to say, the people are happy.”

Most people surveyed — 72 percent — in CNN’s poll said they had been “closely” following news about the legislation, while 19 percent said they had not heard enough about the legislation to determine how it will affect them personally.

The poll broke down specific pieces of the legislation to survey whether respondents felt that components were reasons to support the legislation or oppose it, regardless of how they felt about the bill in its entirety.

More than half (54 percent) said that they considered the extension of tax breaks from Trump’s first term a reason to support the legislation A larger proportion (58 percent) said that its impact on the federal deficit was a reason to oppose the overhaul.

The legislation is projected to add trillions to the national debt to pay for making the tax cuts permanent. It also cuts spending on programs like food assistance and medical coverage for lower-income Americans.

Nearly half of respondents (47 percent) said they oppose the legislation’s changes to social safety net programs, while 39 percent said they support the changes.

The CNN poll surveyed 1,057 people July 10-13. It has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
