Abortion-rights coalition unveils $100M, 10-year plan to restore access

A coalition of advocacy organizations plans to spend $100 million over the next decade to restore access to abortion rights across the country.

The “Abortion Access Now” campaign is made up of nine organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Center for Reproductive Rights, and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The coalition announced its campaign Monday — the second anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

“We envision a future where abortion, and all sexual and reproductive health care, is not only legal but also accessible, affordable, and free from stigma or fear,” the campaign said in a statement.

“This campaign is committed to building and leading a broad, inclusive vision for abortion access, ensuring everyone can make fundamental decisions about their health and bodies with dignity and support,” the coalition added.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization halted federal protections on the right to have an abortion. Since then, the coalition noted that 21 states have enacted bans or severe restrictions on abortion.

The organizations said millions of people have been denied the choice to make personal medical decisions over the last two years, which has resulted in many carrying pregnancies “against their will.”

The coalition will be using the funding to “build a long-term federal strategy to codify the right to abortion.” The strategy will include lobbying efforts, grassroots organizing and public education initiatives.

“The campaign will work to expand abortion access and coverage over the next decade, ensuring a federal right to abortion, making it legal again, and securing access to abortion care in every state,” the announcement reads.
